So what exactly is a Personal Watercraft or PWC as it's often referred to? Personal Watercraft are any form of craft whose pimary method of moving through the water is that of a water jet pump connected to generally an inboard engine. How they are driven is very flexible - really it's a case of what method the craft hs been designed for and hence can be done safely. Stand, sit, kneel....whatever.
Many will think of jet-skis with one person riding when we talk of personal water craft but in reality the market is alot bigger than that these days. Look around busy coastal areas and you find 2, 3 and 4 seater jet boats which are becoming very popular as they can accommodate the needs of a family rather than just an individual.
These craft are powerful though...and offer capabilites not present on more traditional power boats for example. They're quick, fun and it takes time and practice to control them safely! A good starting place is through taking the RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency Course which is run by a variety of school both in the UK (the home of the RYA) and abroad.
