Overview:
Feel the Ocean swell beneath your feet, the wind in your hair and the sun on your face. Experience fabulous sunrises and sunsets. Watch dolphins at play. Milebuilding trips are all about enjoying sailing and the beauty of being at sea without being on a course. Roller furling and electric winches mean life on board is not quite as tiring as it is for the sailors in the Volvo Ocean Race, but sea conditions are often the same.

Milebuilding trips are suitable for anyone with basic sailing experience. They are a good step up for practiced Day Skippers and Flotilla sailors to see if you like it and a useful preparation for more experienced sailors wishing to take their Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore practical examinations. You will gain miles for your log book and experience taking part in a watch system. You will find out about on board maintenenace schedules, long distance catering, weather forecasting etc. We are happy to teach the wonders of navigating by the stars, use of a sextant and how the GPS works!.

On this trip we combine sailing amongst the islands and fjords of Arctic Norway with a 36 hour offshore passage across the Norwegian sea towards Kristiansund. We make landfall at a group of islands north east of Kristiansund and spend the last 2 days inter island cruising again.

Join in Bodo in Northern Norway on the 14th August and depart from Kristiansund in Northern Norway on the 24th August

This is the first leg of our trip home to UK after our summer season sailing in the Lofoten Islands. We cannot predict the weather so we cannot name where we will stop but our plan will be to sail 25/40 nm southwards each day.

The Inner lead between Bodo and Vega is well protected from the Atlantic and provides a fantastic opportunity to explore amongst the many islands and fjords visiting beautiful anchorages and old fishing ports. One of these fjords gives access to the Svartisen glacier where it is possible to lie alongside a jetty and walk right up to the ice. (see blog from previous years)

Once south of the island of Vega we will take Vegafjord and the offshore and more direct route for the 150 nm sail towards the island of Hitra. Here we will find a choice of anchorages to suit every wind direction. Southwestwards from Hitra we will once again follow the inner lead to Kristiansund.

This was new to the programme in 2013, to give us an opportunity to explore a different part of the Norwegian coastline before heading back to UK. It proved very successful so last year we added an extra day. This gave us far more time to explore and so we are repeating that this year.

Like Bodo, Kristiansund has been chosen as the crew change port because of the ease of transport by plane, train and bus from Oslo. The Hurtigruten boat service also stops here. Many of our customers have added to their trip by going back to Olso either by train or boat

The itinerary below is an example, as always we are subject to the weather, and anchorages will be chosen to suit the wind conditions.
