The great thing with dinghy sailing
is you don't need to be near the coast to take it up! If you
are near a large lake, or old disused gravel pit, then you
may well find a school and sailing club nearby. And of course you can tow a dinghy behind a car very easily or even put it on the roof in some instances. Try doing that with a yacht.
Schools offer courses suitable for people learning to sail for the first time, right through to more advanced sailing using spinnakers and race training. Many are recognised by one or more sailing bodies such as the RYA (Royal Yachting Association or YNZ (Yachting New Zealand) for example, whilst some run their own in house designed courses.
In 2004 the RYA revamped the syllabus for
dinghy sailing. The current syallabus offers adult and youth
course streams.
