Sailing Courses:
Faro Sailing School is a fully recognised RYA Training Centre offering a full range of RYA/MCA practical and shorebased sailing courses all year round. We sail the Algarve region which incorporates the well known Portuguese Algarve and the lesser known Spanish Algarve known as the Costa de la Luz with its golden sandy beaches, warm weather, crystal clear waters, friendly people, great food, stunning sunsets and the fact that it is tidal is the icing on the cake.
The school is based in the brand new marina of Isla Canela (Cinnamon Isle), just a 40 minute journey from Faro International Airport and situated right on the Por
tuguese/Spanish border at the mouth of the river Guadiana. This up-market marina complex has ample facilities including showers, restaurants, shops, cashpoints and car hire.
Isla Canela is a perfect base from which to explore the many lovely anchorages, estuaries and marinas along the Portuguese and Spanish Algarve and further afield to Gibraltar and even Morocco.

What you can expect:
The actual itinerary you follow will be dictated by the weather conditions and wind direction prevailing at the time of your course, however, a typical 5 day practical course will follow a similar itinerary to the one detailed below:
| Monday |
A full safety briefing followed by a gentle introductory sail to allow you to acclimatise to the climate, the motion of the yacht and to find your sea legs. We will probably sail up the River Guadiana and spend the night in the marina of Ayamonte or Vila Real de Santo Antonio and eat ashore. |
| Tuesday |
Sail out of the river and head either East or West to El Rompido or the lagoon of Faro depending on the wind direction. Spend the night at anchor and probably row ashore to sample the delicious local fare. |
| Wednesday |
Spend the day practising manoeuvres, we will stop in a picturesque spot to watch the sunset and have dinner on board. There will be plenty of time for relaxing whilst we prepare for an enchanting night sail into port. |
| Thursday |
Start heading back towards Isla Canela, spend the night in another beautiful anchorage such as Tavira or La Antilla. If the weather is good and all the crew are in agreement, there is a possibility of having a B-B-Q on board at a cost of 25 € per person which includes food, wine and beer. |
| Friday |
Sail back to Isla Canela, yacht cleanup, course debrief and certificate issue. Adjourn to the local watering hole for an après-course drink! |
Additional Comments:
- * Does not include exam fees payable to RYA - £135 Coastal Skipper, £155 Yachtmaster Offshore, £25 VHF SRC or a share of examiners travel expenses for Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore exams - - there is an examiner based locally on the Algarve so travel expenses are unlikely to exceed 40 euros

Company Overview:
Faro Sailing School is a fully recognised RYA Training Centre offering a full range of RYA/MCA practical and shorebased sailing courses all year round.
The school is run by the Principal and Chief Instructor, Peter Lightfoot and his partner, Lorie Cunningham. Until 2003 they ran Ibiza Sailing School in the Balearics for 5 years before moving their business to a new base where all year round flights are available.
Peter is a fully qualified RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean and Yachtmaster Instructor and has been sailing all of his life. Lorie is also a fully qualified RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean and a Cruising Instructor and teaches courses up to Day Skipper level and all shorebased courses.
Location & How to Find Us:
The school is based in the marina of Ayamonte, just a 45 minute journey from Faro International Airport and situated right on the Portuguese/Spanish border on the bank of the stunningly beautiful river Guadiana. The marina is right in the heart of Ayamonte and so enjoys ample facilities including showers, restaurants, shops, banks and car parking. With several waterside café bars, it is an excellent place to relax after a great days sailing.
Ayamonte is a very pretty Spanish town which faces the delightful Portuguese town of Vila Real de Santo Antonio on the opposite side of the river Guadiana. The area to the East of Faro is relatively undeveloped compared to the busy Western Algarve which means you experience the “real Spain” and “real Portugal” when you sail with us - an old man sitting on a wooden cart pulled by a donkey is not an uncommon sight in Ayamonte!
Our unique location, on the border between two very different countries p
rovides a perfect base from which to explore the many lovely anchorages, estuaries and marinas along the Portuguese and Spanish coastlines and on one of our longer trips, even further afield to Gibraltar and Morocco.
With the boom in low cost air travel, getting to Faro is very easy from most UK airports. Isla Canela is just 40 minutes away from Faro airport. An alternative airport is Seville at 90 minutes away. Getting to Isla Canela from Faro airport couldn't be easier. The most economical way is to take the scenic train from Faro to Vila Real de Santo Antonio. The taxi fare between the airport and the train station costs about 10 euros and the train fare is 4 euros per person.
