Welcome to Straits Sailing Gibraltar’s friendliest and most professional RYA recognised sailing school.

We feel that your time with us should be a very special experience. It could be that you are looking for a change in career, lifestyle, or even simply looking for a new recreational activity for yourself or family.

You have decided to learn a new skill and take a RYA sail training course. It is our aim to make your sailing course as pleasant, stress free and memorable an experience as possible. It is our job to not only impart the skills that will enable you to take sailing as far as you want to go, but to also develop your confidence within a friendly and professional training environment. You may feel somewhat daunted when asked to berth a yacht for the first time in Morocco or Spain, but our instructors will be there to help, and it is their job to make you feel comfortable and relaxed about practising and enjoying your sailing experience in a safe environment. Learning to sail is about trying, adjusting your technique, and trying again whilst having a good time.

We want to give you the most varied sailing we can, and we have a selection of yachts of different sizes, each with their own characteristics and reefing systems with a wide range of electronic equipment. Fortunately, here at Straits Sailing, we are also able to take advantage of a variety of sailing conditions in tidal waters. The weather is extremely varied and even though the temperatures could be in the thirties, we can still find a good wind to test your sailing skills. We sail from Gibraltar to Spain and Morocco all year round.

Straits Sailing also offer RYA motor boat training courses from Gibraltar, as well as Milebuilding Adventure Cruises which depart from Gibraltar and cruises the coastlines of Portugal and Spain.

Company Overview:
The Principal, Colin Thomas, is backed up by a fully qualified team. All our instructors bring a wealth of experience to their instructing allowing them to teach with a somewhat laid back yet very thorough style. Colin has been an instructor for over eleven years and has taught both in the UK and locally. He launched his own self-built 40ft yacht in 1982, has crossed the Atlantic seven times and been a charter yacht captain and delivery skipper.

Straits Sailing is a fully RYA recognised sailing school, offering a range of practical, live aboard sailing and motor courses based upon the well respected RYA training scheme.

We provide all the bedding aboard as well as full sets of wet weather clothing on free loan to students. We’ve found from experience that students do like to go ashore to sample the local cuisine! All the same, with the exception of three evening meals, all food is included in the course fee.

The sailing in and around the Straits of Gibraltar presents a challenging, yet safe, year-round training area and unlike the UK based schools we can usually guarantee lots of sunshine and warm comfortable temperatures. Statistically, in any month of the year, the greatest percentage of the wind is between force 4-5 with only rare extremes occurring during the winter months.

Location & How to Find Us:

• We are based in Marina Bay a 10 minute walk from Gibraltar's international airport. The marina has all the facilities that you would expect and contains a mix of bars and restaurants making it one of Gibraltar's "in places". This is where both "yachties" and locals hang out. The marina itself is only a short walk from the main town where you can enjoy not only the historic sights and stunning views across the Strait to Africa but also some excellent shopping.
• When you arrive in Gibraltar we will be there to welcome you. Most of our clients arrive the day before the course commences and this is an excellent time to get settled in and meet the other students and instructors. Our office is in Marina Bay and we are more than happy for you to visit the office to check emails, use the phone, store luggage or to just pop round for a coffee and a chat.
