Sailing Holiday and Courses in Thailand and Malaysia
As Sailing Schools go this one's very unusual! It's not often you find a sailing school which is circumnavigating the world which is exactly what Mark Holroyd and his yacht, Meniscus of Gweek are doing since setting off from Southampton in England on 25th September 1996. Currently in Asia (Singapore) Meniscus of Gweek offers you the opportunity to undertake and RYA course and have your certificates issued subject to passing.
Meniscus of Gweek is equipped to DoT requirements for category "O" - unlimited passage ma
king. The cost of any training on Meniscus is priced on a flat rate of one weeks cruising - £575. This may seem a liitle more expensive than undertaking an RYA Course in the UK, however, RYA courses are often of 5 day duration whilst the following prices reflect a full 7 days which makes then very comparable. A course on Meniscus is far more than just a learning experience though, it's a real holiday as well.
Courses take place either from Phuket or Langkawi which Mark cruises between.

In 1985 he started sailing yachts and cruised and raced his 34’ UFO extensively. He has raced in the Fastnet, the Arc, at Cork, Cowes, BVI and Antiguaand completed many ocean passages logging over 80,000 miles.
RYA Yachtmaster Instructor:
Since leaving his position as an executive in the leisure industry in 1993, Mark has run a Royal Yachting Association approved sailing school and Meniscus has been surveyed as an approved RYA sail school.
Additionally Mark is an experienced diver and some years ago trained a chef. A useful combination on a yacht!
Location:
Whilst most have heard of Phuket, most have not heard of Langkawi. This excerpt from world66 travel guides will give you a taste for it though:
"The isles of Langkawi - ninety nine of them, are tucked into the northwest corner of the peninsula and nestled on the Thai-Malaysian sea border. Unspoilt and rustic, it is a tropical paradise spectacularly endowed by nature, one where crystal clear emerald waters, azure skies, lush green vegetation and fantastic limestone formations can be found. But Langkawi is more than captivating beauty ~ it is also a land steep in legends and shrouded in mystery."
With regards to Phuket, it says this:
"Phuket (pronounced 'Poo-ket') is a large island in the off the Thailand's west coast, in the Andaman Sea. The island is about the size of Singapore, with some 40kms (25 miles) of beaches. Phuket is located about 900 kms south from the nation's capital, Bangkok, and is connected to the mainland by a 100 meter-long causeway.
Along with the incredible beaches, hills and lush jungle, Phuket is a water lover's paradise. The reefs and surrounding islands teem with marine life. Phuket is an ideal base from which to explore the Andaman region."
