Sailing Courses:
We provide a full complement of RYA practical courses on board our modern purpose designed training vessel. 'Lady Kimala' is a 50 foot luxury motor cruiser which was built by Hardy Marine in 2004. Our vessel is based at Port Hamble marina.

During your training course you will enjoy the benefit of a private en-suite cabin and high quality catering and hospitality. Our fees are truly all inclusive and there are no hidden extras.

A high standard of individually tailored tuition is delivered to a maximum of two students during each course;. We have a great deal of success in teaching couples and experience leads us to believe that partners learn well together.

The Solent is an ideal location with many interesting and attractive harbours within easy reach such as Bucklers Hard, Portsmouth, Yarmouth, Poole and Weymouth.

'Lady Kimala' is 53 feet in overall length and has a beam of 16 feet. Power is provided by a pair of Caterpillar 720 hp engines fitted with Twin Disc Quickshift gearboxes which make her extremely easy to handle. She is an excellent training vessel and, whilst she is larger than most training school boats, she is exceptionally easy to handle. She is equipped with a full range of navigational equipment including three chart plotters, two VHF radios, radar, Navtex, autopilot and a proper chart table.

On board we have three double cabins all with en-suite shower and wc, central heating and air conditioning. Couples are very welcome on board and if your partner does not wish to take part in the training but just wants to come along for the experience we shall ensure that they are made most welcome. In order to ensure the highest standard of personal tuition all practical courses are limited to a maximum of two students.

'Lady Kimala' is capable of cruising at 25 knots and her semi-displacement hull gives an extremely smooth ride.

Company Overview:
Mercator Maritime was established in 2004 by it’s owners David Griffiths and Kim Billington-Lowe who had seen an opportunity to set up a small very high quality sea school and charter business.

'Lady Kimala' was the first Hardy 50 to be built, and in designing her we worked closely with both the naval architect and the boat builder to ensure that she would meet our customers requirements. She combines truly exceptional seakeeping with a luxurious interior and a full range of navigational equipment.

David, our skipper and principal instructor, bought his first boat in 1977 and since then he has owned many boats including an RLM 32, a Broom 35, an Aquastar 38 and an Aquastar 46. He has cruised extensively including the English and French coasts, northern Europe, the Channel Islands, the western coast of the USA, Canada, South Africa and the Mediterranean.

He taught his first RYA course in 1988 and launched Mercator Maritime in 2004. He believes in maintaining the highest standards of seamanship whilst ensuring that all our guests, whether charter passengers or sea school students have a truly exceptional experience..
